Gumroad, Payhip, Lemon Squeezy, Etsy, your own site with Stripe, and Substack compared on fees, discovery, and setup — with what you keep on a $20 sale.

Best Platforms to Sell Ebooks & Digital Products in 2026

There is no single best platform for selling an ebook. Three questions decide it: what you keep per sale, whether the platform sends you buyers, and how much you have to set up yourself. This comparison covers five places to sell a one-off digital product, plus Substack, which works on a different model and gets its own section.

Fees below were checked against each platform's own pricing pages in October 2026 (Payhip's tax handling re-checked October 19, 2026). Where an official page couldn't be read, the figure is labeled as a third-party estimate with its source.

Gumroad

No monthly fee. Direct sales cost 10% + $0.50 plus card processing of roughly 2.9% + $0.30; sales through the Discover marketplace cost a flat 30% with processing included. Gumroad is the fastest to launch on and the only storefront here with its own marketplace. It is also the most expensive per direct sale. PDFLaunch's Gumroad for beginners guide covers the details.

Best for: a first product with no audience.

Payhip

Three plans with the same features: Free Forever at 5%, Plus at $29/month and 2%, Pro at $99/month and 0%. Stripe or PayPal processing (typically around 2.9% + $0.30) applies on top. Payhip has no marketplace, so every buyer comes from your own traffic. Per Payhip's pricing page (read October 19, 2026), it collects, reports and remits digital EU and UK VAT and US and Canadian sales tax, and lets you set up other taxes, which it reports to you. For more, see the guide to selling on Payhip and the Gumroad vs. Payhip comparison.

Best for: sellers who already have traffic and want lower fees.

Lemon Squeezy

No monthly fee and 5% + $0.50 per transaction. Its pricing page doesn't list a separate card processing fee. Surcharges stack on top: +1.5% for transactions outside the US, +1.5% for PayPal, and +0.5% for subscription payments. Payouts are free to US bank accounts and 1% elsewhere. Lemon Squeezy acts as merchant of record, meaning it takes on tax calculation and collection across jurisdictions.

One thing to know before committing: Lemon Squeezy was acquired by Stripe, and in its January 28, 2026 update its CEO described the team as building Stripe Managed Payments, Stripe's merchant-of-record product.

Best for: sellers who want tax handled and a low flat percentage, and are comfortable with that direction.

Etsy

Etsy charges $0.20 to publish a listing, which lasts four months or until the item sells, then a 6.5% transaction fee. Payment processing for US sellers is 3% + $0.25 (third-party estimate, per Craftybase and SellerFeeCalc). If a sale comes from one of Etsy's Offsite Ads, there is a 15% fee; Etsy says these ads are optional for most sellers but can be required based on 12-month sales. Third-party sources put the mandatory threshold at $10,000 a year with a 12% rate above it, and report a one-time shop set-up fee of $15–$29 for new shops (estimates, per Craftybase).

Etsy is a real marketplace with buyers searching for downloads. It suits visual products — planners, printables, templates — better than prose-heavy guides.

Best for: design-led downloads.

Your Own Site + Stripe

The lowest fees and the most work. Stripe's US card rate is 2.9% + $0.30 (third-party-sourced: as cited on Substack's help page; Stripe's own pricing page showed regional pricing when checked). You build the site, deliver the file, and handle sales tax yourself. Stripe's Managed Payments adds merchant-of-record services for 3.5% per transaction on top of payment fees.

Best for: sellers with proven demand and existing traffic.

What You Keep on a $20 Sale

These are calculations from the fees above for a US buyer paying by card.

PlatformFeesYou keep
Own site + Stripe$0.88$19.12
Lemon Squeezy$1.50$18.50
Own site + Stripe Managed Payments$1.58$18.42
Payhip (free plan)$1.88$18.12
Etsy*$2.35$17.65
Gumroad (direct)$3.38$16.62
Gumroad (Discover)$6.00$14.00

*Uses the third-party estimate for Etsy's US processing rate. An Offsite Ads sale costs a further $3.00.

The cheapest option is not automatically the right one. Stripe at $19.12 assumes you already have a site, buyers, and a way to handle tax. Gumroad's Discover costs the most and is the only row where the platform found the buyer for you.

A Different Model: Substack

Substack doesn't sell one-off files; it sells subscriptions to ongoing writing. Publishing is free. With paid subscriptions on, Substack keeps 10% of each subscription payment, and Stripe charges 2.9% + $0.30 per payment for US cards plus 0.7% for recurring billing. On a $10/month subscription that is about $1.66 in fees, leaving roughly $8.34.

Choose it if you plan to publish regularly and want recurring revenue. If you have one finished ebook to sell, it is the wrong tool. PDFLaunch's self-publishing tools comparison covers newsletter and blog platforms in more depth.

How to Choose

  • No audience yet: Gumroad, for Discover.
  • Existing traffic, want lower fees: Payhip or Lemon Squeezy.
  • Visual, printable products: Etsy.
  • Proven product and steady traffic: your own site.
  • Ongoing writing rather than a single product: Substack.

Getting the Product Ready

None of these platforms creates the ebook. PDFLaunch researches a niche, generates the guide as PDF and EPUB, and writes the listing copy. It creates the Gumroad listing automatically; for Payhip and Lemon Squeezy you upload the files yourself and confirm your live link in PDFLaunch. Your first publish is free, no credit card required.

Frequently Asked Questions

Which platform is best for selling ebooks?

It depends on whether you have an audience. Without one, Gumroad's Discover marketplace is the main way a storefront platform will send you buyers. With one, Payhip or Lemon Squeezy leave you more of each sale.

What is the cheapest way to sell a digital product?

Your own site with Stripe has the lowest fees, at card processing only. It also leaves site building, file delivery, and sales tax to you.

Can I sell an ebook on Substack?

Not as a one-off product. Substack sells subscriptions to ongoing writing and keeps 10% of subscription revenue.
